Subscribing is now available

After conversing with guy, and getting the level of spam down to a manageable level, Guy has agreed to implement subscribers on the forum.

This will allow regular contributors to sign in and avoid the Captcha for every comment.  It should also  mean that we don’t get litigate comments from regular users caught in the spam filter.

Registration required admin approval.  Before I could even test it, a spammer tried to register!

Users will be “approved” after they have contributed a few posts “from outside” – I’ll do a comment search for the user name and if it does not appear at least a few times, the registration will be denied.

Users do not have to register – it’s a service for regular users but people can remain anonymous and use the captcha each time.

Registered users will have to complete a captcha when they log in, but while they are logged in, it’s not needed.

The most prolific spammers cannot get to the register page, blocked by the rest of the anti-spam software recently upgraded.

Register/login  here:

https://guymcpherson.com/wp-login.php

And use the register link below the login, or try this one:

https://guymcpherson.com/wp-login.php?action=register

Currently that screen is not publicized to cut down on fake attempts.

Then be patient!

The admins may not get to the approval screen immediately, and for most users, we’ll need to check you’re a regular.  I want to avoid spammers and those ideologically opposed to the concept of NTHE from posting a few sound-bites, registering, then causing disruption.

The back-end forum is currently far more open, and we’re only blocking spammers, if you want to argue the reality of NTHE, do so back there, everyone on the “front end blog” has heard it a hundred times already.

If you have never commented, please post a comment before you register, saying hello, and indicating you are familiar with the concepts here.  That way we know it’s not a spamming program trying to register.

– Doomer Support. 🙂

    How to NBL’ers maintain moral?

  • I mean ‘increase morale’ because maintaining in current conditions would leave you near rock bottom obviously. And I can’t spell. There’s my two posts for today. Is that rule still active?

  • The fact that the forces of evil are so determined to take down the site or clutter it up is a sure sign Guy is on the right track.

  • Lidia,

Did you attempt to register with a different email address to what you normally associate with your posts, or is a spammer trying to pretend to be you to get past the filters?

  • I’m lost. How do we subscribe? The link given is not an active one it seems. Also it would be nice to know if I am considered a back end or front end blogger because why comment here if you are not welcome or considered part of the community.

I wasn’t clear about clinking on the “Register” link on that page – I amended the post. I also made the links active.

Were you aware of the level spam this blog gets? Over thirty spammers tried to log in before the first actual user appeared. The level is out of line with the length the blog has been around, way out of scale, which indicates an attempt to use spammers as a childish “DDoS” style attack. The level of spam was bringing the site speed down to a crawl on the old hosting service.

It’s those spammers, particularly the automated “bots”, that we’re trying to keep out.

If you continue to have a problem registering, I’m happy to create the account and email you the details, same with anyone here. 🙂

Hello. It seems that my email address is not getting recognized in respect to registering.

Check that email address, your password should be there soon!

  • @DS, if you are referring to my comment of yesterday about the comment that seemed to have gotten lost… it was actually the comment that now does appear above it. My ‘bug report’ comment showed up right away, though. It was only later that I could see the ‘disappeared’ comment in its right place in the thread.

I registered at the forum, and on the WordPress site, without apparent problems.

    Thanks for your hard work.

  • I registered. Access was denied by Mr. Doomer Support. Any reason why this would be the case if I promise I am just me, a daily user, reader, NTHE-support seeker and harmless to all except maybe the garden slugs I feed my ducks.

  • @Jami Linn

Likely reason your registration was denied was because doing a search for your ID in prior posting DS didn’t find it as a regular contributor to the commentary.

The Subscription Option is for Regular NBL commenters who often drop on posts, to make their lives a bit easier and not have to do the Captcha every time. If you only post occassionally, it’s not a big deal to have to do the Captcha.

If you appear regularly here and don’t spam the site, your registration will get approved by an Admin.

What RE said, which brings up a good point.

Your post shows you to a) be a human and not a “bot” and b) be familiar with the content of the blog. Sufficient for me to approve – and I hadn’t deleted it after all!.

Most spammers don’t know the content of the blogs they spam, and don’t care, they are after the links associated with the web site in the commentator’s name. Hence the contents of the post are bland and could apply equally to Morris Dancing as they do to mass extinction. A simple post on this thread, showing you have taken the time to at least read a phrase or two, is suffice!

Was trying to minimize the admin overhead for Guy since he was kind enough to go along with my suggestion.

Sorry about that, I should have thought of this exception. 🙁

  • “AL, you appear to be doing Armchair Shrinking of my Thinking. LOL.

I’m definitely into armchair shrinking (less is more) thinking! 🙂

“Let’s start with the ‘Resisting Feeling Sad’ part. True and Not True.”

Many will disagree for sure. It sounds callous. But as you imply below, people like me (not facing imminent starvation, having more healthy time than not) are extremely favored by life. Isn’t it incumbent on us to be happy about that while it lasts? Being happy makes other people happy, so that is far from being callous. Being sad will save or benefit no one.

“Far as being Beached on the Shores of Doom goes, you can look at the Positive side of it. For instance, once things get really rolling here, there will be a LOT of Dead Banksters! LOL.”

Just as WWII bomber pilots over France at night experienced the sublimity (and awesome beauty) of the explosions, what is happening to the planet is exhilarating. Nothing like this before, nothing like this again. And the resister, win or lose, “rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.”

“Barring absolute destitution, you have some choices and can take some action, you are not powerless on the local level. What the world in general does it what it does, but moping and weeping about it won’t change it. So if you are going to go out anyhow, Go Out with a Smile! :)”

So I would conclude as well. If our resistance efforts can ease one person’s (or creature’s) suffering, resistance will be worth it.

  • Appreciate the new feature and think it will be useful for regular contributors and a defense against spammers.

    Happy new Year to all.

  • okay, my second attempt went through without a hitch. thanks support people!

An ecosystem of our own making could pose a threat

The plastisphere, a marine ecosystem that starts with bacteria on particles of discarded plastic, is drawing increasing attention. Scientists fear it might host pathogens and leach dangerous chemicals.

[As with nuclear power, it’s little late for that fear, eh?]

  • Tom,
80,000 new chemicals since WWII, with only a handful tested for safety.

  • China plans on building 500 nuclear power plants in the next 50 years. 2014 will be the year people discover peak oil does not mean we are running out of oil, it means economic collapse due to price rises.

    Morning Mike,

My, you lack patience. Some of us sleep from time to time. 😉

I approved your membership around 11 pm PST last night. Messages should have gone though. Did you not get an email telling you that you were approved? check your spam filters, if your messages are getting blocked here as false positives in the spam filter, I’m curious if the same happened to the approval email. if you find it, let me know and what anti-spam you personally use, if any.

None of your posts should have been caught in spam filters, they are usually long, on topic and clearly not a spambot. There are not enough hyperlinks to trigger that block criteria. You connection to the internet is coming though an allTel server in Kentucky, not one of the blacklisted French providers. Makes no sense your posts are being caught.

Need to figure out why, I like a challenge!

  • Tom, I approved your subscription this morning. We have 41 subscribe, 3 actual people who had commented before, 38 spammers.

okay, my second attempt went through without a hitch. thanks support people!

(Support hat off, Haniel hat on)

That “revenue stream” is monetized and sold as bonds, so reducing the prison population below current levels would result in losses to those bonds in a manner similar to the threat that “put-backs” in the MBS fiasco. With ZIRP in place, the bond only needs to pay under 2% to get plenty of takers. Banks borrow from the Fed for .5%, buy a bond that pays 1.5%, and the prison-industrial complex gets to sip at the hose of the money-printing bonanza. Then there’s the profits form the “service” industry the slave labor provides.

For private prisons to continue to follow the “infinite growth” paradigm, then the number incarcerated will increase.

  • Hello.. We found the approval email and Mike is signed in.. The filter is either thru the Windows mail program or Norton.. The email was in the spam box which Michael doesn’t visit. Hope this solves the problem. Ann (Michael’s spouse & lo mid grade home tech).

  • A new essay has been posted at the top of the page, courtesy of RE. It’s here, with my thanks.

  • Just curious, what’s a “normal” level of spamming for a blog site? For a doomer blog site? How far off the norm is NBL?

  • Wow! There instantly! So cool! Thanks, all you techies! 🙂

  • Just curious, what’s a “normal” level of spamming for a blog site? For a doomer blog site? How far off the norm is NBL?

One or two is normal for a wordpress blogging site with akismet installed – the original anti-spam here. 5-7 is common when there is no anti-spam. More than that means you;ve got the spammers attention. Like email spam goes up if you click the “unsubscribe” link (you confirmed the email address is active) when they know a site is vulnerable, they swarm.

Guy was getting 40+ a day, which was unusual in my experience.

It’s down to a few a day, a pretty normal level, with most of the anti-spam being handled by the captcha.

  • Hi, how do I register? I tried the link but my registration was denied. I’m concerned about NTHE and have been reading Guy’s latest book.
    thanks

  • We got Napalmed over in the Light Brigade thread, and I have posted there twice today, so I put my response up over in the Forum Overflow thread called Unhappy Campers.

    RE

  • the virgin terry (in case you see this)

I’m up to my 2 post limit elsewhere, so will respond briefly here.

“…material ‘wealth’ and all that comes with it don’t necessarily produce happiness or a sense of fulfillment, connection, meaning. that’s perhaps the most tragic part. it was all for nothing but fleeting pleasures and comforting delusions. it was all for nothing.”

Not only that. Speaking as one who was born simultaneously into oppressor and oppressed categories, I have found the oppressor privilege to be utterly degrading to me as an oppressor. Maybe it’s the oppressed part of me which has allowed me to see the venality, ugliness, viciousness of oppression. I wish I could take back many things I did (and said), but unfortunately I can’t. My privilege was encased in land, education and custom. OTOH, I never did have trinkets, money or toys, and that has served me well.

“this from artleads: ‘I was born into an impossible world, one that provided me no space at all. My only option was for the world to change.’”

“i hear u, brother. i’m also afraid and well convinced that just as we had no say/choice about being born, we have no power to ‘change the world’”

Just to clarify. By “impossible situation,” I mean more than one thing. For reasons that I won’t discuss, I was “unwanted” and shamed, even, I’m convinced, as a fetus.

“…rest assured of course the ‘world’ will change, as it always has, but we have essentially no power to control the change. we’re just along for the ride. perhaps our only ‘freewill’ is in choosing the time and circumstances of our own death. choose at what point the ride ends. it’s not much, but it’s something.”

I appreciate your sharing your views in such a kindly way. I wish I could agree. Like everyone else, I’d like to fit in, to have my views meet with general approval. But I see the world in entirely different terms. With no wish to argue and offend prevailing sensibilities on NBL, I’m never sure where to stop. But in short, I don’t know how you KNOW what I just quoted you as saying. Given the entire panoply and range of human experience, it’s possible to think (and feel convinced of down to the cellular level) that we are aspects of a greater power, and share with it the inability to avoid changing the entire universe with every thought and every flap of our butterfly wings. But I agree with you that this has no direct bearing on the ability to avoid NTE. Every thought and every flap of our collective butterfly wings point to NTE. (And I’m reminded that the sheer massiveness of the physical forces of destruction defy any human or non human remediation. I respect this conclusion, whether I am in a position to be sure of it or not.)

It’s sort of a case where the spiritual and secular views lack the means to communicate with each other. But I hope we can keep talking.

  • My first post here. Been reading a lot on Truthdig.com with Chris Hedges and about the transition movement. I feel like transition is all we have left to hang on to. Life is fragile now that the end is not only possible but likely. With family, media, and the so called educated pulling me into this black hole, I do find some comfort in voicing my opinions here.

  • Welcome, Fred Gunter. The sun will come out tomorrow (at least). 🙂 I’ll check Truthdig.com right now. Thanks for the reminder.
