Shadows and Lies

When you’re dead, you don’t know you’re dead. People around you feel it, though. It’s the same when you’re stupid.

My promotion of a gift economy seems stupid because it doesn’t involve the pursuit of money. As a result, I receive gifts, especially when I travel. Books and shirts are among the most popular items I receive, and the latter often contain witty historical expressions. Among my tee shirts is one with a phrase from Benjamin Franklin: “It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority.”

Most people I encounter clearly do not agree, at least in practice. In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is. Still, I’m astonished at the prevailing mentality among the American citizenry I encounter. Apparently we are so afraid to question authority, so willing to believe blatant lies, that we willingly capitulate to liars and thieves dressed as CEOs and politicians.

I provide few links in this essay. Evidence for each of the following claims is abundant and easily obtained. If you’ve not grasped these tidbits by now, additional evidence will remain unconvincing. I suspect your ignorance is willful, your inability to see a direct result of eyes sealed tightly shut.

Most notable is the inability of nearly everybody I know to pursue radicalism. For starters, most people I’ve met cannot distinguish between a radical and an extremist, despite the clear difference.

If it’s unclear I’m writing about you, ask yourself this question: “What have I done recently that runs counter to the status quo?” If you don’t have a significant response, you’re likely to squirm while reading this essay.

Plunging down a rabbit hole — any rabbit hole — apparently makes one likely to pursue radicalism on additional topics. Fortunately for governments, few citizens are willing to look deeply into any topic, no matter how important. The shadows in the cave are far too comfortable to risk facing reality head-on.

And then there are the Strong Suggestions of Thermodynamics Laws of Thermodynamics. The official story of 9/11 violates the Laws of Thermodynamics, yet few people I know are willing to question the official narrative (consider, for example, the 11 September 2015 report from Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth (Beyond-Misinformation-2015), controlled demolition of WTC building 7, and the admission of an inside job by Dubya’s chief economist). The deep state is real, but most people are unwilling to deal in reality. After all, doing so would adhere to Franklin’s maxim, a notion foreign to the typical modern ‘murican. The Orwellian absurdity continues with the disparaging term applied to those who question the impossible official narrative: “truther.”

A few additional examples are presented below. They provide an opportunity for me to launch a too-infrequent rant into the void. Ergo, my latest attempt to combine reality with its common partner, absurdity.

Civilization is not the only way to live. Indeed, humans lived without civilization for more than two million years. We’ve lived within the shackles of civilization for a few thousand years. Civilization clearly is omnicidal. Few notice. Even fewer care.

Civilization is an expression of patriarchy. The current version of industrial civilization benefits a few Caucasian men at the expense of every other living being. Most civilized people believe this set of living arrangements is wonderful.

If you are reading these words, you benefit from imperialism. American Empire is real, and it covers the globe. There is no escape.

The two dominant political parties in the United States represent twin cheeks on the same, corporate ass. If you believe the next person to occupy the Oval Office will improve the situation for the masses, then you do not understand the issue. Elizabeth Warren, or any other “progressive” candidate (i.e., contemporary neo-conservative) — the next great hope of many forgetful Democrats — will prove as disappointing as the current president to these deluded, die-hard dims Dems. Warren, by the way, is worth about $14.5 million, owns a $5 million mansion in Cambridge, was paid $350,000 to teach just one class at Harvard, and has the audacity to say that “the system is rigged to benefit the rich.”

The United States is dominated by a corporate government and corporate media. When greed is your only god, sociopaths assume control. We’re there, fully embedded within patriarchal fascism. The standard response of my fellow citizens: “I want more. I deserve more.” Apparently I occupy the land of the me and home of the crave.

The big banks have run this country for a very long time. They orchestrate everything from laundering drug money to cracking down on any form of resistance. They’ve been in charge for a very long time. Few notice, and even fewer care.

Working on behalf the big banks is the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which has ruled the country and world with an iron fist since World War II. The myriad agencies within the executive branch, including the National Security (sic) Agency, feed the machine. NSA whistle-blower Bill Binney, who worked for the NSA for 30 years before resigning because of concerns he had regarding illegal spying on U.S. citizens in 2001, provides an apt summary: “The Ultimate Goal is Total Population Control.”

Working on behalf the federal government, hence the big banks, are the media. Controlling the message is imperative. Examples are replete, but here is a simple, recent one about the connection between the CIA and the media.

The American system of public education is designed to “dumb down” the populace. Critical thinking belongs to a bygone era. Nearly every one of the so-called, self-proclaimed teachers I know refuses to acknowledge reality on this issue. And most other matters, for that matter. These teachers are paid to think, and also to teach others how to think. They have overwhelmingly failed, and they continue to fail.

The prison-industrial complex, like almost every other aspect of American culture, is designed to enrich the wealthy and enslave the poor. Some people claim the system isn’t working. Au contraire: It’s working as planned, as indicated by the beneficiaries of American Empire.

Monogamy and the marriage-industrial complex are part and parcel of patriarchy. The dominant paradigm is not superior to other ways of living. Deep down inside, you surely understand.

We cannot sustain the unsustainable, including civilization. Nor should we attempt to do so. Civilization requires tremendous violence. Industrial civilization is the most violent version yet.

American exceptionalism is a myth. American military power, largely supported by willfully ignorant taxpayers, is necessary to maintain American lifestyles, including grid-tied electricity, the modern banking system, and all that follows.

Abrupt climate change is under way. Global climate change causes suffering and death of humans and other organisms. There is no escape.

Net energy decline is under way and soon will contribute to the early death of most humans on Earth. Fossil fuels have peaked and the Age of Expansion has been replaced with the Age of Contraction. The Age of Conquest has nearly reached its overdue end.

Collapse of industrial civilization is under way and will be complete soon. When collapse is complete, the world’s remaining nuclear power plants will melt down catastrophically, thus shortening the lives of many humans and other organisms. There is no escape.

The interaction between anthropogenic climate change and collapse of industrial civilization affects every aspect of human life in the industrialized world. There is no politically viable approach to addressing either issue, much less the interaction between them.

Many centuries ago, Plato presciently wrote a line that resonates strongly with me: “Those who are able to see beyond the shadows and lies of their culture will never be understood, let alone believed by the masses.” Indeed, we’ll disparage them by, paradoxically, referring to them as “truthers.” We will therefore remain in the shadows of our cave of blissful ignorance.

  • @ Stormcrow, may I cut and paste, and share and credit you for this genius rant?

Regarding 911 – If you believe that a group of people from a country other that the United States:

1)Decided to do something together without telling anyone else.

2)Made a detailed plan on how to do it without telling anyone else.

3)Raised alot of money to support that plan without telling anyone
    else.

4)Trained people to implement that plan without telling anyone else.

5)Implemented the plan without telling anyone else.

Then you are a believer in Conspiracies.

    Defintion from Wiki :

A conspiracy theory is an explanatory proposition that accuses two or more persons, a group, or an organization of having caused or covered up, through secret planning and deliberate action, an illegal or harmful event or situation.[1][2][3]

So if you believe in the “official” 911 version that people plotted together, then you, by default believe in conspiracies. Further, since,
no one has all the facts, even the official version would have to be a theory of sorts.

So take heart all , for whatever our beliefs, We’re probably all Conspiracy Theorists! (Unless,of course, you believe that you have ALL the FACTS.Then you would be a “Conspiracy Factualist!).

  • @ Grant Schreiber

    YEP!!!

  • For those who seemed not to watch the 9/11 events as they unfolded that horrible day and are still confused by all the “truthers” out there, maybe you should sit down at your plasma screen and take a couple hours to watch the uncut version?
Notice the detonation puffs ahead of the collapse? Notice the almost exactly 30 minute delay in the collapse of the second tower? Notice that no other building in history has ever collapsed from a fire this way (law of thermodynamics in play). However, thousands have collapsed this way from planned demolition (more thermodynamics)

Notice the unusual decision to demolish building 7 the same day even though no plane hit it? Oh wait. That’s not in the video.
Notice there are no plane fragments left in the field or at the pentagon? Also not mentioned in the video. Two commercial airplanes were evaporated…. lol.

It’s called using your damn eyes to see what’s in front of you. Oh look, a kitty.

  • Tom –

Have you ever felt that you’re fluorescing (similar to “goose flesh” but more mental/psychic – goes up the back of the neck and “explodes” through the mind & body, out in all directions) – like dissolving or “fizzing” out for a time? What is that?

in the most general sense, it is you, lightbeing/soul you, interacting with the dream of your physical human body.

more specifically, it sounds like energy that is like kundalini. this energy mostly seems to come in the form of sparks, streamers, explosions, pops, and feels more localized and organic/alive within the dreamspace of your local soul/human system than chi.

(your particular system however is totally unique, and although it may show similarities to other reports or known qualities about these energies, you very much have to figure it out for yourself.)

kundalini, from my experience, tends to show itself as white, lavender-purple, or pure purple. it can have visual forms of diamonds, flames or flowers in your mental/psychic space. it usually stays local to your spine/torso/back/head system, but can work throughout your body – it can be felt as like streams or thin currents in various places in your body.

chi on the other hand I associate with more of a whole-body experience, or as high-vibrational-wave energy rather than sparks or streams. I associate chi with colors more on the silver, blue, and red parts of the spectrum, but mostly as silver with variations in extremely “high pitched” ultra fast wave-pulses. chi has more of a “spatial” quality, while kundalini is more “local.”

when chi does localize, it moves more to the hands and second chakra area (right below the naval – the lower tan t’ien) and middle parts of the body. kundalini is much more root charka, and sixth chakra (third eye) and seventh/crown chakra experience.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dantian
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kundalini

what I really think it is is basically the same energy – higher vibrational stuff from larger lightbeing you, but just operating in different ways, and perceived in your local dreamspace differently.

find out more via books, meditation, asking the energy itself, and via dreams as well. dreamspace is *everything* ultimately, so you can get answers and feedback from all possible sources imaginable in your universe.

you may want to learn about it and experience it, but you also may want to channel it and work with it – to whatever degree you are interested.

  • ulvfugl,

I want to see if the commenter formerly believed to be a rational actor, Kevin Moore, can provide a straight answer to a simple question. When did “do your own research” become an acceptable answer to a question? I asked Kevin, not you.

I don’t care about the answer particularly because it’s likely to be like yours: a jumble of irrelevant, small-time goals—(incinerating paperwork, stealing stuff), easily accomplished in any number of tried and tested ways that do not require hijacking and crashing aeroplanes—and one giant falsehood, repeated over and over, which is that Silverstein made out like a bandit. He did not. The insurance receipts cover a fraction, but by no means the entire, amount needed to rebuild.

Just accept it, unless you fancy keeping company with anti-Semites and other loons.

  • @ Martin

Preposterous irrelevancies. I see you are just playing games. Anti-semitism !!?? Ffs. So now you shame yourself as well. I thought you were above that sort of crap.

@ Benjamin the Donkey, Robin Datta

To make a dualistic division, Consciousness, matter, space and time, is crazy. Totally contradicts all of Datta’s Vedic ramblings as well, that consciousness is primary. If there were no consciousness, nothing would know anything about anything, there could be the Universe, even many, but no awareness thereof. So when does awareness arise ? Robin Datta knows the answer to this ? Of course not.

  • Blah,blah,motherfucking blah,blah. 911 blah,blah. consciousness blah,blah. philosophical blah,blah. Meanwhile the earth burns. Answer Deep Green Resistance!!!

  • Martin asked: ‘Why did the twin towers have to come down at all?’

I have no definitive answer to that question but there are many facts that lead to highly plausible explanations.

    1. The buildings contained a lot of asbestos which was acceptable as an insulation material at the time of construction but which had been labelled a health hazard subsequently; to have the buildings empty for months or years and remove the asbestos would have cost more than the buildings were worth to the owner.

    2. The owner took out insurance for an ‘impossible event’ -everyone with any knowledge of the buildings knew they had been designed to withstand multiple aircraft impacts- and then claimed the insurance, negating the losses that would have been otherwise incurred, indeed making a substantial profit on the exercise since Larry Silverstein claimed there were two events, and the insurance company (which he probably was a major shareholder in) agreed.

    3. If planes had simply crashed into the buildings, the fires put out and repairs made to the buildings the cost would have been horrendous and there would have been no opportunity to lock the uninformed masses into the ‘Freedom Tower’ mentality that was subsequently used by TPTB to manipulate them for another decade….. all the bullshit about not letting ‘terrorists’ win. There is also the matter of lots of opportunities for rorts to be worked during the construction phase, and the ‘benefit’ to GDP, the faux measure of economic activity which describes repair/replacement of things broken as productive.

    4. Without the deaths of many innocent people it would have been more difficult to generate the [faux] sense of outrage that led to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq [that had been pre-planned] and massive expansion of the fascist security agencies at home -more money-maki8ng rackets for those at the top of the pyramid. Anyone who is locked into the ‘they would never do that to their own people’ narrative need only consider the tens of thousands of casualties that were incurred every week in WW1 as TPTB sent young men marching towards machine guns and realise that ordinary folk are not ‘their own people’; TPTB could not care less about ordinary people: ordinary people are just cannon fodder, to be consumed as required, for profit or political gain. Remember, within hours the Bush administration had worked out exactly who was to blame and who needed to be attacked in vengeance, despite the demolition being ‘a complete surprise that nobody could have foreseen’.

    5. The evidence of numerous financial crimes that had been carried out by the sociopaths at the top of the pyramid had to be destroyed; that was best accomplished pulverising everything and imposing a security curtain around the demolitions sites for months afterwards.

  • kevin –

that’s a fantastic answer. one question: “and the insurance company (which he probably was a major shareholder in) agreed.”

that part about “probably” – I know zero of the details with this, but is the insurance company public? wouldn’t a major ownership stake, if it existed, be a matter of public record? and deeper, how would it be possible to both be a major shareholder and a major policyholder? it seems there would have to be some conflict of interest laws applicable?

also – the insurance company would bend over backwards not to have to make a payout for this policy. if there was some way they could dig out a insider conspiracy, they would be all over (I know how insurance investigators work on the very small scale, I have done business with them directly. I can only imagine what they would do on this scale to find the real truth.)

so – is Silverstein really a major shareholder of that ins co? again, that seems backwards, as he would only be hurting himself as a shareholder of this insurance company if he had something to do with bringing down the towers and forcing such a huge payout.

(full disclaimer, I have no belief that 9/11 was an inside job, but I am always interested in real information and facts)

    thanks, kevin!

  • Nature Dingbats Last.

  • Martin.

Amongst many other tings, I double-checked:

    1.the melting point of steel

    2. the burning temperature of aviation fuel starved of oxygen (black smoke being the evidence of that).

    3. the melting point and boiling point of titanium (aircraft engines.

Rather than me giving you the answers, I suggest you do your own research (it will probably take you all of 5 minutes).

If you need to convince yourself at home all, you need do is hold a six inch steel nail in the flame of a candle without using gloves. Hold the nail near the head and put the sharp end in the flame.

    a. the candle flame is yellow; it generates black smoke when its temperature is lowered where it is in contact with the cold nail. The candle flame will be around 300oC, similar to that of the combustion temperature of any other medium chain-length hydrocarbon alkane.

    b. you will feel no discomfort because iron (steel) is a rather poor conductor of heat (try the same with a piece of copper wire of the same length and you will drop it after a few seconds).

    c. when you do eventually feel a little warmth, hold the nail 2 metres above the floor and drop it; note how it falls.

Now imagine steel girders tens of centimetres across and over a hundred metres long. Do you really think that heat from a short-lived low-temperature fire in an upper story of a tall building could soften hundreds of tonnes of steel hundreds of metres away? Bear in mind that other steel framed buildings have been exposed to higher temperature fires for much, much longer without falling down. There are dozens of examples.

I did not need to research gravity since I have known its value (9.81 metres per second squared) since the late 1960s.

Now, under the preposterous narrative of the Bush administration (and retold by the Obama administration) heat from low-temperature fires caused structural failure of buildings that were designed to withstand aircraft impacts and fires.

Even if you were naïve enough to believe that the aircraft impact had weakened steel components of the central columns, the so-called pancake theory of collapse fails to explain the symmetry of the collapse ( the side that was not impacted failing at exactly the same time as the side that had been impacted) and you have to account for the fact that undamaged the lower storeys provided NO RESITANCE to the impact of higher levels falling on them.

And then there is Building Seven. No plane, even smaller fire, even lower temperature. Same result!

In other words, the official narrative is a load of bollocks and you have to be lazy, scientifically illiterate and brain-dead to believe it.

Fortunately for TPTB, most people in western societies are lazy, scientifically illiterate and brain-dead, and they will argue indefinitely in favour of the mathematically, chemically and physically impossible rather than believe the truth….. that they have been lied to.

It is easier to deceive someone than to convince them they have been deceived.

  • Enough scientific facts have been presented to convince anyone with a brain that still functions properly that 9/11 was an inside job that was carried out for personal gain and for political purposes.

The details of insurance companies and who are investors cannot be determined by the man in the street because most of such companies exist under false pretences; they operate under names that were established decades ago but which have been absorbed or taken over by shadowy companies that are themselves owned by other shadowy companies. I do not have the time or inclination to was time trying to get to the bottom of that pit of deceit.

Something more mundane and immediately relevant:

    http://news.msn.co.nz/nationalnews/8842990/asbestos-fear-closes-auckland-school

An Auckland primary school will be closed for more than a week over an asbestos scare.

Parents were concerned asbestos dust had spread from a demolition site at Bayfield School in Herne Bay and the school was closed on Thursday.

Tests had come back clear, but the board of trustees decided to complete the demolition before allowing the students back, Radio New Zealand reported.

The children will attend Ponsonby Primary and return to their school on May 20 at the earliest, board chairman David McPherson said.

The Ministry of Education and WorkSafe are investigating the handling of the demolition.

  • @Grant Schreiber

Solar is for the private corporations. NASA has the correct focus. Extra solar. I wonder why?! hrmmm…

Yes, “geoengineering” has been happening, but you know what I meant by the term. There’s no good reason NOT to geoengineer at this point.. it buys us more time.

As for how long it may take to get to the new earth. who cares?! I mean, don’t we mostly agree here that staying on Terra is collective suicide? So it’s… difficult to travel to the new earth, might as well give up?! I’m just not getting this.

  • I’ve always been a sucker for dark, misanthropic humor so this piece really hits the sweet spot for me…thanks Guy.

We humans are so hopelessly self obsessed. Of course we are destroying the planet as a suitable habitat for our species (and sadly for millions of others) but the living Earth will endure and recover in ways we can’t even imagine. For those of you who haven’t already read it, please check out John Michael Greer’s THE NEXT TEN BILLION YEARS http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-next-ten-billion-years.html

In Gulliver’s Travels, the great misanthropic humorist Jonathan Swift described US as “the most pernicious race of odious little vermin ever suffered to crawl upon the face of the earth”. Ouch…what a disturbing ring of truth!

One final comforting thought from the irrepressible Franz Kafka: “There’s plenty of hope. Just not for us!”

  • @ kevin moore

And been fooled. And they don’t want to admit that they are fools.

It’s an affront to the intelligence that they think they’ve got.

Just like ‘He’s got weapons of mass destruction’ got the British and Americans to go into Iraq, and Colin Powell lying to the world at the UN, and Rumsfeld on TV re Afghanistan.

    @ mo flow

You’re just as bad. The guy was a shabby small time crook, he gets told ‘Do you want 2 billion dollars worth of towers or do you want to sleep with the fishes ?’
Those people know how stuff works. You do favours. You keep your mouth shut. You get your cut.

  • Guy, it’s creative acts like this that will sustain you and support your audiences without them realizing it. It’s amazing what true mourning can do!

    More, please.

This link shows you what i did to the master of the web;s leading “9/11 truth debunking” site, Screw Loose Change. Your arguments are absolute nonsense, and i can show you one by one, i have a mechanical engineering degree. Fires do not cause buildings to collapse symmetrically, to cast off huge steel beams horizontally hundreds of feet, melt iron, blow out smoke puffs 2-40 stories below the collapse zone, …. And none of your fantasy attempts even remotely explains WTC 7, NOT hit by a plane.

  • Mental blight seeps like stain into the fabric of life. Resembling in cognitive space abandoned brown fields which were formerly ‘productive’. Well, those industrial tumors produced copious amounts of glittery garbage anyway, until necrosis, brought on by high fuel prices and low ERoEI, set in. In the same fashion, it seems to take ever more time and energy to blow away slimy myths and think clearly these days. Low mental ERoEI.

Degenerating dead waste lingers inside and out, profligately spreads, obscures, infects. Sickening the whole. Reassuring viral lies splashed in our faces, painted on the rotting plank… urged by necessity, prodded by sword tip, to steadily march out atop the roiling abyss. As though the gleeful approval of faithful believers (all singing in perfect harmony) will make that bridge to nowhere good and solid.

Complaints, nay, observations… are not tolerated. Continued perpetration invites summary execution by various means (church analogs arise like hot gun smoke). In a system based on illusion (cheap abundant resources), un-optimistic reality gazing is strictly verboten. Hell, in this wobbly fantasy society stating the obvious could topple the whole construct… well, that’s certainly the running fear. And that fear is the closest that mindset ever gets to touching reality. News for them: The house of cards is coming down.

Now I’m to blame, because I said it. They pummel ineffectively, casting confused shadows, spinning: “OK, so like, big deal dude, who cares if The Emperor is a nudist?” Hush, back to sleep. Let your brain rot easy. Oh well, maybe those dead mental zones will shield… from realizing the horror while experiencing it. Psycho-anesthesia. After all, we wouldn’t want to wake up in the middle of surgery, or butchery.

To join a drunken mob, just drink. What’s that stuff brewing in the cauldron? Smells like hemlock.

NBL sure hits the spot. That’s why so many of us have no interest in other blogs. I’m sure there must be something else but right now I can’t think what, that strikes me as more revolutionary yet doable than a gifting economy. If it really catches on, Guy will need a whole lot more support.

  • It is not possible to debunk the laws of mathematics, chemistry and physics.

Actually, quite possible. All one has to do is check the Word of God. It says that humans were created from clay in the Garden of Eden. The universe is approximately 5,000 years old, etc. etc.

Those faithful to the Word would be well advised to avoid the physicist Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan’s discussion of the bible.

And for all you conspiracy theory scumbags out there, The best 9/11 conspiracy crap debunking video ever!

i would have expected a variety of qualified experts to properly explore both sides of the argument with some intellectual rigor.

Whew. THAT’S what I wanted to hear!

The awareness that recognises that hearing as existent is not a concept / construct, not the one called “consciousness” nor one called by any other name. Names are handles that make concepts / constructs easier to intellectually manipulate. The ability to be aware of awareness itself, without concepts / constructs (the “of” in “awareness of”) is unusual, to say the least. But without it, one will continue to flounder when intellectually wrestling with the matter. Awareness cannot be manipulated in the intellect: it can be aware of intellectual activities.

Yes, we have Wednesday named after Wodin. Having a common origin can be an advantage not only in peace but also in war:

“Jones had already concluded the Germans used code names which were too descriptive. He asked a specialist in the German language and literature at Bletchley Park about the word Wotan. The specialist realised Wotan referred to Wōden, a one-eyed god, and might therefore be a single beam navigation system. Jones agreed and knew it would have to include a distance-measurement system.”

  • Robert Callaghan, i totally dig where u’re coming from and love your contibutions to this blog with maybe just a little caveat to your exhortation to us quoted here:

‘You and only you, in all of human history, have the power to change the world.’

this reminds me of pat’s pat and repeated exhortation to ‘kill yourself and save the planet’. it reminds me of mike ruppert embracing martyrdom after dedicating much of his adult life to ‘change/save the world’, only in the end to succumb to the mighty spiritual cost of trying to do so. ruppert was quite gifted too. if he couldn’t save the world, if guy and every other fothermucker who are trying to do so can’t… i can only say what’s been said to pat a few times now. if u think u can change the world, robert, lead the way.

Fed Up is the movie the food industry doesn’t want you to see. It blows the lid off everything we thought we knew about food and weight loss, revealing a 30-year campaign by the food industry, aided by the U.S. government, to mislead and confuse the American public, resulting in one of the largest health epidemics in history. With narration by co-producer Katie Couric, co-producer Laurie David (Oscar-winning producer of An Inconvenient Truth) and director Stephanie Soechtig, Fed Up will change the way you eat forever. “Yes, “geoengineering” has been happening, but you know what I meant by the term. There’s no good reason NOT to geoengineer at this point.. it buys us more time. ”

More time to do what? Drill more oil? Destroy more of the planet? Do you seriously believe that the greedheads that have driven the planet to become lethal to life should turn their attention to the cooling down the planet? Should TEPCO run this or Halliburton or ExxonMobile?

    Chapman adds:
“As for how long it may take to get to the new earth. who cares?! I mean, don’t we mostly agree here that staying on Terra is collective suicide? So it’s… difficult to travel to the new earth, might as well give up?! I’m just not getting this.”

You don’t understand futile efforts that will result in failure? Listen, making a generational ship to anywhere is IMPOSSIBLE. It can’t be done. We have neither the time, the intelligence nor the material to build a spaceship that can carry jars of sperm and eggs to the stars and then create babies once it crashes into New Earth, where, we’ll assume they’ll be able to raise themselves. Nor can we build a ship to carry ten breeding pairs who will slowly create a vast civilization while onboard during the thousands of years voyage to wherever. You might as well start making an ark out of sponges.

  • Everyone changes the world. Everyone, just by living on this planet, influences the trajectory of this planet system. The question is how much. Each individual by themselves has little effect, but when individuals act in a collective manner (usually persuaded by a charismatic individual) then there is greater influence to this trajectory. We’ve built the matrix that contains us.

One of the oddest/strangest habits I see is people attributing to one person what the actions of many were. For example, saying things like “Jobs did this” or “Obama did that.” These people aren’t acting alone – if they were, they wouldn’t be able to do what has been attributed to them. Even Einstein said he stood on the shoulders of giants and he was talking about something he discovered largely in isolation (with some help from friends and building upon what had happened before him). However, the Obama administration has a LOT of people doing what they think they’re supposed to be doing and not everyone knows what everyone else is doing but everyone goes along with what whoever is above them say/do without being critical.

In biological systems, it doesn’t matter if an individual does something that’s different unless that’s selectively advantageous. In general it is the ensemble behaviour of the population that determines what happens in a bottom up manner. We’ve given up that way of life as indicated
    by the oddity I describe.

  • @Robin Datta

Sounds like circular thought processes and mild dissociation, which is totally cool, but I don’t understand how this is related to a primacy. It just doesn’t mean much to me.

These higher cognitive functions evolved in us out of necessity. I’m just not seeing how you confuse high degrees of self-awareness for some sort of prime reality or what have you.

Guess I’m just too dense, hehe.

Absolute garbage. I signed the AE911 Truth petition. You have not dealt with even a single item presented by AE, or by me in my previous post, or the article by me which i ;inked to in which i shredded the head guy at Screw Loose Change.

Simple laws of thermodynamics. Iron melts at 2800 deg F. Molten iron sphere were found in the dust deposited by the main towers as they came down. These spheres required two things. A. Iron had to melt/ B The molten iron had to be flung a great distance, which would shape it into a sphere to minimize surface tension. Hydrocarbon fires cannot get above some 1800 deg F,can’t even get to that level without special efforts such as air forcing and enclosing of the fire to minimize heat loss. And fire-driven collapses cannot fling stuff sideways, gravity only works downward. In fact, of the steel samples examined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the author of the official government report, 98% didn’t even get to 500 deg F, whereas 1112 deg F (600 deg C) is required to significantly weaken structural steel. This is but one reason why the official story is impossible. Also, in every direction, Sum of forces = mass x acceleration (Newton’s Law). No force in a certain direction means no acceleration, and hence, a gravity driven collapse ensuing from a fire cannot result in the flinging os huge steel beams horizontally, because gravity is limited to a downward force. Anyone who advances divine intervention against the laws of science is a charlatan of he worst sort.

  • Guess I’m just too dense, hehe.
Not in the least. To intellectually handle such abstruse stuff indicates a high level of intelligence, and to proffer such a proposition indicates humility.

Conscious awareness is unlike all other concepts, constructs and objects, including the one called “conscious awareness”: all of them are perceived as objects, but it is the subject, and what is objectified is never a perceiver. It is not subject to intellection.

To realise that all reality exists in consciousness, one has also to be aware/conscious of awareness / consciousness without any “of”. It cannot be reached through intellection alone.

  • “And NO they were not ‘extremely rigid’, they were designed to be flexible, so that they would bend, architects and engineers are not the fools you assume them to be. ”

obviously a skyscraper is more rigid than flexible or they wouldn’t be able to stand up. do you realize something can be both rigid and flexible and these are not contradictions. look at a tree for example. wood is both rigid and flexible. a giant redwood wouldn’t stand up long if it wasnt rigid but it is also quite flexible – to a certain extent. do you get my point? its the same for steel framed buildings. they combine relative lightness with the required rigidity, which is why steel frames are used for tall buildings. and they have some degree of flexibility built in too, but its very limited and this is the important bit…the flexibility only works well.. and in a controlled manner.. if the structure remains intact.

where you are going wrong is your assumption that because a steel framed building is infinitely flexible (which is not true) it should remain standing when any sort of damage happens to it. but this is incorrect on both counts. once the necessary structural integrity (that supports its massive weight) has been undermined, in this case by weakening of the steel structure by fire (absolutely savage in this case, and compounded by the already severe, but not fatal, impact damage) a structure will collapse (case in point, it happened, 3 times). this is true of steel structures because steel is weakened by fire. it loses its rigidity and buckles, structure becomes unstable and a positive feedback loop of cascading failure occurs. end of story.

that the towers collapsed under the circumstances is not contentious with structural engineers at all. there are many cases, perhaps hundreds of steel framed buildings collapsing due to fires. that they are damaged by fire is why steel columns and joists are protected by either concrete or paint. its not actual melting thats the problem. steel wont melt at those temperatures but it will buckle. you seem to be saying that because steel doesnt melt in a fire, a building shouldn’t collapse, but this is a misunderstanding of the real problem of steel not being able to support its designed loads when heated to fire temperatures.

  • Ok, I’ll bite on the 9/11 stuff….

I just happened to be up at 1 am watching tv that night,(not at all typical then), in pre Afraidia, and it just came on. Very surreal. I noticed within a very short time some very serious photos like identakit images of ‘Arabs’ appeared on TV and press, and these racial type identities were convicted by an avalanche of public opinion…it seems.
I watched some videos 2 years ago and heard the line about free-fall, and must admit it didn’t occur to me that is how it went. The same engineers saying this stuff also said there was eyewitness testimony, and footage,(?) of people in the buildings writhing around as though in some kind of electrostatic, microwave field, trying to rip their clothes off(nylon?). Some kind of technology was being used, they speculated, that could atomise steel and concrete, so it just turned to dust, (concrete dust) at free fall. The question was asked with a photo of the site on the same day, “Where is all the rubble?”
Freefall could be Thermite, but it could also be scalar microwave orbiting zipper technology? But without further conclusive evidence, how would we Jo Blows know? I also heard that the reason the space shuttle was so big was to carry all the military hardware, and what Branson and others have going up as a re-entry space plane was what NASA had intended back in the day. Military got the controls of the shuttle design.
What the hell did they put up there in those 135 missions?

9/11 allowed for the Patriot act to become law, and then anyone could be disappeared, and no one could say they disappeared, and you have the fascist USA you got there now.
Salient questions always asked when considering so called conspiracy theories:
who benefited?, and what actually changed?.
Most here probably heard all this before.
I think it is highly likely it was a lot of things being done at the same time, but to me , as the then Prime Minister John Howard was in Washington, seated very close by, and as he subsequently became a strong ally of GW in all that ensued after 9/11, I’d have to say the towers coming down were a demo of power. How that power is actually framed to decision makers, polies etc if difficult to be clear on, but I heard talk of the massive Feb 2011 Earthquake in Christchurch was being touted as a demo of ‘scalar’ technology.

Sounds great, I mean, that 40% of USA GDP for 40 years must have got some results, right?

Still waiting for the Aliens to land, but I think we need the 4 C rise and some more radiation for it to be comfortable enough for the Jones Aliens to buy our real estate, and move in.

  • Maybe the most important evidence from the WTC is the nano thermite. It is truly the smoking gun…..irrefutable evidence of controlled demolition. There is no other possible explanation for tons of the stuff lying all over Manhattan that day. Here is a current article about it:

    http://www.globalresearch.ca/911-truth-wtc-debris-and-the-debate-on-nano-thermite/5381633

    11. We are now at a time when very large numbers of professionals in the United States and Europe, and in other parts of the world as well, are becoming increasingly aware that, to say the least, something is wrong here. Meanwhile, those who continue to push the Bush story on this are dwindling in number, they are becoming more desperate, and they are using more and more language that is crude.

For example, there is a Mr. Joseph Nobles who has changed the top level domain name of org to info, and, although he is neither an architect nor engineer, he has registered his domain name as ae911truth.info. Within his website, Mr. Nobles describes his background as follows:

“I am currently a live voice writer, which means I produce captions for live television using voice recognition software. I used to be a working actor with the various “day jobs” such a profession requires. I also graduated from International Bible College (now Heritage Christian University) with a BA in Bible, and attended Harding Graduate School of Religion for two years pursuing a Masters in Christian Theology. I am now an agnostic on all matters religious.”

Then, as an example or two of the language that Mr. Nobles uses, we find:

”They pretend to be spreading real and valuable information, but their website and presentations are filled with misinformation and lies.

  • OzMan: Hey mate! Well, if you liked that, then this next episode should put you on the edge of your seat!

    https://robertscribbler.com/2014/05/10/ocean-heat-anomaly-spikes-to-new-extreme-high-of-1-16-c-above-average-on-may-10-2014/

On May 10 global ocean surface temperatures hit a new extreme high for 2014 of +1.16 C above the already hotter than normal 1979-2000 average. This extraordinary temperature departure was driven in part by a warming of Equatorial Pacific waters to a +.59 C anomaly, putting that region in the range of a weak El Nino.

Overall, global ocean temperatures show very high positive anomalies in all regions with the mid-to-high latitude Northern Hemisphere oceans showing an extraordinary departure in the range of +1.36 C. Heat of particularly high anomaly values remains concentrated in surface zones in the North Pacific south of Alaska and in the Barents Sea, which over the past few years has displayed excessive warmth after a near permanent loss of seasonal sea ice cover. Hot spots in this zone continue to show +3 to +4 C above average temperature anomalies contributing to sea ice recession and weakness in the region east of Svalbard and on to the Laptev Sea.

An emerging Kelvin Wave off the West Coast of Ecuador has also created a high temperature anomaly hot spot in the range of +2.5 to +3.5 near the Nino 1 and 2 region. This expanding warm pool has been reinforced by broad area synoptic westerly winds counter to typical easterly trades which is pushing warm water toward the coasts of South and Central America.

Overall Equatorial Pacific Ocean temperatures in central and eastern zones have ranged between +.4 and +.7 C above average depending on region. Though these temperatures are in the range of El Nino, they will have to maintain or increase for a period of two months for an official state of El Nino to be declared.

It is worth noting that since the base-line for the GFS summary given above is in the 1979-2000 range, total departures from 1880 values are likely in the range of .3 to .4 C hotter, putting the actual global anomaly for the date at around +1.5 C.

In context, the swing toward a weak though still strengthening El Nino pattern is already starting to push global sea surface temperatures into or near the record range. We will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.

  • “Civilization is an expression of patriarchy. The current version of industrial civilization benefits a few Caucasian men at the expense of every other living being. Most civilized people believe this set of living arrangements is wonderful.”-GM

Civilization is not limited to White Men, its pretty much been the paradigm through all of Asia as well since the beginning of the Ag Revolution.

Ag is a territorial acquisition paradigm, and so particularly at the beginning dependent on men for armies to acquire and defend land they took over. This was not limited to Europeans, the Chinese did the same thing. It most certainly is not racially distributed just to caucasians, though because males are generally the warriors, it ubiquitously is a male dominated type of society.

Thing is here, if you look at it from Paul Chefurka’s Thermodynamic POV, this was just the most efficient way of dissipating the energy. There wasn’t any stopping it, it was always an inevitability, by the laws of Thermodynamics. In this respect, it is incorrect to attribute the problems to “Patriarchy”, because Patriarchy is just an outcome of the thermodynamics.

Patriarchy as such is a heavily loaded term, I can’t stand it. It tends to lay all the BLAME for our current sad condition on MEN. “Its the MEN who are to blame here, if just Women ran the world, things would be so much better”. This is nonsense. If it really was better, women would be running the world! It didn’t work out that way just about anywhere.

Patriarchy is a divisive concept, and it does not explain either why we are in a world of shit. this comes from the development of Ag and its concurrent development of war machines and a monetary system. It is relatively gender independent, as both males and females took part and built the system. Men had control through most of the time period yes, but it would likely have been no different if the women were in control. It is driven by Thermodynamics. Just ask Paul Chefurka.

Santa Fe New Mexican, May 9, 2014: Nuke expert believes ‘kitty litter’ switch led to WIPP leak — An absorbent material similar to kitty litter is the likely cause of a radiation leak […] according to a longtime nuclear expert. […] Los Alamos National Laboratory […] switched from using a clay- based absorbent in the drums [sent to WIPP] to a wheat-based absorbent — both made of the same materials used in different types of kitty litter, according to Jim Conca, a geochemist who worked for years at the lab and in environmental monitoring for WIPP. […] The kitty litter switch could have created dried-out nitrate salts and led to a “mild” explosion in one or more of the waste containers, Conca said. […] LANL, Department of Energy and WIPP did not specifically comment on the theory. […] Conca is a nuclear power advocate and a WIPP believer, so he’s hoping his kitty litter theory proves correct. […] The organic absorbents made of wheat or corn […] “It absorbs like a sponge. If you let the salts dry out completely, they can ignite.”

Jim Conca, Forbes columnist who worked in environmental monitoring for WIPP: “I think it is the most likely cause, but there is still some room for doubt until they get to the drum that leaked. [It is] an awfully good thing this drum was in WIPP when it went off because if had been anywhere else, just think about what might have happened. So they need to act quickly, they need to corral all these drums and get them into WIPP right away, put them in Panel 7 and seal it off […] it is incredibly important to act quickly. You don’t want to wait months and let the drums keep drying out. They need to be gathered quickly and get them to WIPP. By being stupid, we risk doing this wrong and making it worse.” [there’s more]

  • ” This is nonsense. If it really was better, women would be running the world! It didn’t work out that way just about anywhere.”

So what if Paul Chefurka is wrong? And where is your previous argument that humankind merely took a wrong turn?

But to change the subject slightly, I see patriarchy as alive and well when I walk with my wife (a term I try to avoid) and the women we greet along the way are ALWAYS looking at me and not her. In our partnership, I’m not the leader (if there is one), so why do all those women assume that I am?

  • My Take:

Patriarchy: dominated by power/taking = male
Matriarchy: dominated by caring/giving = female
    Take or give?
    I could elaborate, why bother.

  • I guess they only put explosives in tower 7, and not the ones hit by jets.

  • artleads walks right into several jokes by saying “But to change the subject slightly, I see patriarchy as alive and well when I walk with my wife (a term I try to avoid)”

So what do you call her “lover?” “mate?” “sweetie?” “the old ball and chain?” “the battle axe?” “sir?”

    And he continues with

“and the women we greet along the way are ALWAYS looking at me and not her.”

    zip up your pants!

  • When I hear about “Net Neutrality” or “high-frequency trading,” I realize that I know about one basic premise of those issues, what’s unfair about them and who’s doing them, and not one level deeper.

It reminds me that 95% of the people of MY education, literacy and political/social awareness level are aware of climate chaos at just the rote level that I am on those previous two issues. “If I don’t see it affecting me directly and immediately…” “I’ll get to it when I get to it.”

On the other topic above, I’ve avoided posting on forums since that day, until these past 2 years on this one (because of its level of relevance and contributors). But occasionally I had thought I would sign into someplace like ZeroHedge with the handle “Building 7”, just for provocative fun, but not to belabor the subject, just leave it as a statement of the illogical idiocies of our time.

I guess another handle could be “Controlled Demolition”, but that’s clubbing the ignorantia a little too hard, don’t ya think?

I idea that something of low, low probability could happen three times in succession, in one hour or day, with one having not even the dramatic cover of a plane impact, is mathematically absurd. Tooth Fairy level.

The logical and most probable belief is that, at the center, a C.D. was desired, and a false flag plane impact was engineered, somewhat shoddily — but that’s what you have a Propaganda Establishment in place for to fill in the gaps in foolish minds — and now all that’s left to look for is “the rest of the story”. (But having grown up in political awareness after November, 1963, not expecting much. The Propaganda has only grown more thick and, apparently, effective.)

I doubt that Perry Mason will get his witness stand confession just before the last commercial, or that Columbo (Peter Falk) will turn around and ask “just one more question” and a certain ex-VP will trip up and admit all he knows.

Seems there may or may not be a reaping coming on, which we are part of but powerless to affect for others.

So we just go on with our lives, more motivated than ever before to seek the quality we most believe in.

I hear kids playing in a big swimming pool outside my window (but I am busy typing this) and have an invite to a big family barbecue block party this afternoon that I should get ready for, but like it was said (Plato or Buddha or Castaneda?) keep Death (or Extinction) at your side while you live and can be aware to appreciate life.

And I think that’s what I do hereabouts. It may have sharpened my appreciation, believe it has, but there’s no “control” me to have tested the alternative. (Being what? Ignorant?) So, being here, I hope I’ve made the correct choice today.

  • Grant

A female friend clarified (reinforced) for me the baggage contained in the word “wife.” And though she’s legally married, she and her spouse prefer the term “partner.” For now, that term is fine with me. I don’t use it religiously.

As for the women looking at me…that might once have been a treat for my male conceit. Now it makes me sad, even desperate. So freaking little has changed.

    Comedy Tonight:

  • Although, with the recent plane disappearance, the question “Just where did all those people go?” could just glide in as one additional inflective point of interest. They got on those planes, and just what were their individual stories/horrors as they experienced them? Like most of us would, I shudder to think.

And yet, in the “media” Propaganda Establishment of today, they fixate on stories like a missing 276, while ignoring the war around that story which has claimed 10-50,000 lives. (Dark skins don’t count for much, unless a sex-related story is needed to cover up greater crimes.)

Anyone else think that Snowden deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, among many worthy contenders, but the media would probably bury that story too, in the slim case the Stockholm IndCiv hostages found their cojones for just one more time.

Selective infotainment presented, makes me think one day they’re going to “pack journalize” onto the wrong story, peel away the usual superficialities, and — oh no! — find they’ve exhumed the stinking corpse of one more many crimes they were supposed to stay away from. Just fantasizing…

Utter GARBAGE. The fire was absolutely NOT “savage.” In WTC2 case, most of the fuel was consumed in a huge fireball OUTSIDE the structure. NIST’s own investigation of fire-affected steel samples found 98% of them didn’t even get to 500 deg F, let alone the 1112 deg F needed to significantly weaken structural steel (none of the samples did that), let alone the 2800 deg F needed to account for the molten iron spheres found in the dust. And you are pretending that WTC 7 was hit by a plane,
And not a single steel-frame hi rise has ever collapsed due to fire, aside from the three which ALLEGEDLY did so on 9/11. Your contention that this has happened hundreds of times shows you have total contempt for science, indeed for the very notion of FACT. You make it up as you go along.

“When a fairly spiritual male friend of mine (who had finally found a committed relationship ) confided in me he was thinking of being single again, and then in the very next breath expressed his latest idea for raising consciousness worldwide, I wrote this poem :

    UNTITLED

If you want to change the world…, love someone…-really love them.
Find the one who calls to your soul, who doesn’t make sense.
Throw away your check list and put your ear to their heart and listen.
Hear the names, the prayers, the songs of every living thing-
every winged one, every furry and scaled one,
every underground and underwater one, every green and flowering one,
every not yet born and dying one…
Hear their melancholy praises back to the One who gave them life.
If you haven’t heard your own name yet, you haven’t listened long enough.
If your eyes aren’t filled with tears, if you aren’t bowing at their feet,
then you haven’t ever grieved having almost lost them.

If you want to change the world… love someone, one someone,
beyond yourself, beyond desire and reason,
beyond your preferences for youth, beauty and variety
and all your superficial concepts of freedom.
We have given ourselves so many choices
we have forgotten that true liberation
comes from standing in the middle of the soul’s fire
and burning through our resistance to Love.
    All creation is one Love.
Look into their eyes and see-really see
if they are the one to bring the axe to your head.
If not, walk away. Right now.
    Don’t waste time “trying.”
And know that your decision has nothing to do with them
because ultimately it’s NOT with WHO, but
    WHEN we choose to SURRENDER.

If you want to change the world… love someone.
Love them for life-beyond your fear of death,
beyond your fear of being manipulated
by the Parent there inside your head.
Don’t tell them you’re willing to die for them.
Say you’re willing to LIVE WITH them,
plant trees with them and watch them grow.
Be their hero by telling them how beautiful they are in their vulnerable majesty,
by helping them to remember every day that they are Life
    through your adoration and devotion.

If you want to change the world… love someone
in all their faces, through all their seasons
and they will heal you of your schizophrenia-
    your double-mindedness and half-heartedness
which keeps your Spirit and body separate-
which keeps you alone and always looking outside your Self
for something to make your life worth living.
There will always be another someone.
Soon the new shiny one will become the old dull one
and you’ll grow restless again, trading in partners like cars,
trading in Life for the latest object of your desire.
People don’t need any more choices.
    What humans needs is Androgeny—
    Patience and Compassion, non-seeking, non-doing,
breathing together in one place, and sinking deep intertwining roots that are
strong enough to hold the Earth together,
while we shake off the cement and steel from our skin.

If you want to change the world… love someone, one someone .
Love and protect them as if they are the last holy vessel.
Love them through their fear of abandonment
Which they have been holding for all of humanity.
No, the wound is not theirs to heal alone.
No, they are not weak or co-dependent.

If you want to change the world… love someone
    all the way through
    until they believe you,
until their instincts, their visions, their voice, their art, their passion,
their wildness have returned to them
until they is a force of love more powerful
than all the political media demons who seek to devalue and destroy them.

If you want to change the world,
lay down your causes, your guns and protest signs.
Lay down your inner war, your righteous anger
    and love someone…
beyond all of your striving for greatness,
beyond your tenacious quest for enlightenment.
The holy grail stands before you
if you would only take them in your arms
and let go of searching for something other than intimacy.

What if peace is a dream, which can only be remembered
through the heart of this two or more ?
What if this pairing is the key to opening the heart?

If you want to change the world…love someone
to the depths of your shadow,
to the highest reaches of your Being,
back to the Garden where you first met them,
to the gateway of the rainbow realm
where you walk through together as Light as One,
to the point of no return,
to the ends and the beginning of a new Earth.

The US economy is a house of cards. Every aspect of it is fraudulent, and the illusion of recovery is created with fraudulent statistics.

American capitalism itself is an illusion. All financial markets are rigged. Massive liquidity poured into financial markets by the Federal Reserve’s Quantitative Easing inflates stock and bond prices and drives interest rates, which are supposed to be a measure of the cost of capital, to zero or negative, with the implication that capital is so abundant that its cost is zero and can be had for free. Large enterprises, such as mega-banks and auto manufacturers, that go bankrupt are not permitted to fail. Instead, public debt and money creation are used to cover private losses and keep corporations “too big to fail” afloat at the expense not of shareholders but of people who do not own the shares of the corporations.

Profits are no longer a measure that social welfare is being served by capitalism’s efficient use of resources when profits are achieved by substituting cheaper foreign labor for domestic labor, with resultant decline in consumer purchasing power and rise in income and wealth inequality. In the 21st century, the era of jobs offshoring, the US has experienced an unprecedented explosion in income and wealth inequality. I have made reference to this hard evidence of the failure of capitalism to provide for the social welfare in the traditional economic sense in my book, The Failure of Laissez Faire Capitalism, and Thomas Piketty’s just published book, Capital in the 21st Century, has brought an alarming picture of reality to insouciant economists, such as Paul Krugman. As worrisome as Piketty’s picture is of inequality, I agree with Michael Hudson that the situation is worse than Piketty describes. http://michael-hudson.com/2014/04/pikettys-wealth-gap-wake-up/

Capitalism has been transformed by powerful private interests whose control over governments, courts, and regulatory agencies has turned capitalism into a looting mechanism. Wall Street no longer performs any positive function. Wall Street is a looting mechanism, a deadweight loss to society. Wall Street makes profits by front-running trades with fast computers, by selling fraudulent financial instruments that it is betting against as investment grade securities, by leveraging equity to unprecedented heights, making bets that cannot be covered, and by rigging all commodity markets.

The Federal Reserve and the US Treasury’s “Plunge Protection Team” aid the looting by supporting the stock market with purchases of stock futures, and protect the dollar from the extraordinary money-printing by selling naked shorts into the Comex gold futures market.

The US economy no longer is based on education, hard work, free market prices and the accountability that real free markets impose. Instead, the US economy is based on manipulation of prices, speculative control of commodities, support of the dollar by Washington’s puppet states, manipulated and falsified official statistics, propaganda from the financial media, and inertia by countries, such as Russia and China, who are directly harmed, both economically and politically, by the dollar payments system.

As the governments in most of the rest of the world are incompetent, Washington’s incompetence doesn’t stand out, and this is Washington’s salvation.

But it is not a salvation for Americans who live under Washington’s rule. As all statistical evidence makes completely clear, the share of income and wealth going to the bulk of the US population is declining. This decline means the end of the consumer market that has been the mainstay of the US economy. Now that the mega-rich have even more disproportionate shares of the income and wealth, what happens to an economy based on selling imports and off-shored production of goods and services to a domestic consumer market? How do the vast majority of Americans purchase more when their incomes have not grown for years and have even declined and they are too impoverished to borrow more from banks that won’t lend?

The America in which I grew up was self-sufficient. Foreign trade was a small part of the economy. When I was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, the US still had a trade surplus except for oil. Offshoring of America’s jobs had not begun, and US earnings on its foreign investments exceeded foreign earnings on US investments. Therefore, America’s earnings abroad covered its energy deficit in its balance of trade.

The economic stability achieved during the Reagan administration was shattered by Wall Street greed. Wall Street threatened corporations with takeovers if the corporations did not produce higher profits by relocating their production of goods and services for American markets abroad. The lower labor costs boosted earnings and stock prices and satisfied Wall Street’s cravings for ever more earnings, but brought an end to the rise in US living standards except for the mega-rich. Financial deregulation loaded the economy with the risks of asset bubbles.

Americans are an amazingly insouciant people. By now any other people would have burnt Wall Street to the ground.

Washington has unique subjects. Americans will take endless abuse and blame some outside government for their predicament–Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, China, Russia. Such an insouciant and passive people are ideal targets for looting, and their economy, hollowed-out by looting, is a house of cards.

  • @ andyuk

obviously a skyscraper is more rigid than flexible or they wouldn’t be able to stand up. do you realize something can be both rigid and flexible and these are not contradictions.

Um, andyuk, do you realise that these are technical terms ? Do you realise you have no idea what you are talking about ?

A structure can be designed to be rigid or designed to flex. WTC towers were designed to flex.

where you are going wrong is your assumption that because a steel framed building is infinitely flexible (which is not true) it should remain standing when any sort of damage happens to it. but this is incorrect on both counts. once the necessary structural integrity (that supports its massive weight) has been undermined, in this case by weakening of the steel structure by fire (absolutely savage in this case, and compounded by the already severe, but not fatal, impact damage) a structure will collapse (case in point, it happened, 3 times). this is true of steel structures because steel is weakened by fire. it loses its rigidity and buckles, structure becomes unstable and a positive feedback loop of cascading failure occurs. end of story.

Hahaha, where I am going wrong ? My assumption ?

Look kid, I’m not going wrong, and I’m not making any assumption.

Unlike you, I don’t rely for my information on the BBC which is a propaganda mouthpiece for Empire. I think that the people who actually design and build and demolish steel frame skyscrapers have a better understanding.

The collapsing pancake feedback theory is ridiculous. Have you seen the cores of those buildings ? If all the floors fell, the cores would still have remained. Unless they were weakened by some other means.

If your amazing theory was correct, and for the first time ever, a steel frame skyscraper collapsed as the result of an impact and a small fire, because of some unique structural anomaly, then you are still left with another question to explain.

Why did Building 7, another very large steel frame building, with a completely different structure, which was not subjected to any impact or jet fuel, collapse again in the typical fashion of a controlled demolition ?

And then there is also Building 6…

  • “My Take:

Patriarchy: dominated by power/taking = male
Matriarchy: dominated by caring/giving = female
    Take or give?
I could elaborate, why bother.” -MT

Pitching out definitions from Wiki doesn’t make the reality any different.

For all intents and purposes, Matriarchy simply has not existed since the beginning of the Ag Revolution. You can’t show that Matriarchy would have worked any better over the intervening time period, because it simply was not pursued to any great degree of success anywhere. If it had been pursued somewhere and was successful as a paradigm, you would have an argument, but overall it just was out-competed thermodynamically by what you label as “Patriarchy”.

It is a waste of time and highly divisive to make resource depletion and impending DOOM (which whether you think it is Extinction or just massive population knockdown still fits the category of DOOM) an argument about whether things would have gone better if Women ran the World. That is not how it played out, that simply wasn’t the meme for the Ag/Industrial society.

It’s a lot like making Political arguments about Gay Marriage and working everyone into a tizzy about that. It’s a distraction and quite a useless controversy overall.

This is not about White Men taking over the world and destroying it, because White Men are so much more Evil than White Women or Black Men or Chinese Men yadda yadda. It’s a question of a species exploiting its environment as a whole, and the faster you did it the faster you grew, and by so growing you wipe out everybody else, until of course you yourself get wiped out because you were so fucking successful with the paradigm.

Making the argument about Patriarchy vs Matriarchy takes your eye off the ball here, and it really has very little to do with how it all played out.

What a tiresome person you are dragging out these dreary anachronistic shibboleths to get yourself attention here.

  • Tom — I was starting to think of something, maybe something snappy, to say about your post, and then as I read through the poem, I realized that that was something of what I went through today, and it still remains quite a challenge.

The “block party”/barbecue wasn’t happening when I got there, because the entire family/clan was over at the hospital visiting with a niece, 20-year-old college student, whose heart stopped briefly a week ago, and who is undergoing surgery tomorrow (today now) with 7 doctors, and I talked with her, and about her future, and she walked out with us, looking so tiny and frail, and as we left I felt myself praying for something as I don’t remember doing in decades. “Just give me this one thing!” is how I felt, screaming inside to someone or something, as the outrage of this girl’s infirmity kept striking me.

So it was I who fed part of the family afterward, and then spent the rest of the evening with two twin boys, 4 months old, as I haven’t gotten to do this particular one of my favorite things for many years now. Getting one of them to start vocalizing, the baby cooing thing, but him hearing his own voice, and playing with it along with me was a treat that will stay with me.

While I was doing that, there occurred to me a rough definition of Guy’s “quality living” metric, which went something like “Doing the things that make you FORGET about NTE, or whatever it is, for at least a few moments.” (In my case, all of the day.)

Remember. Forget. Do. Remember. Forget. Do. Doesn’t quite roll off like some Tibetan chant, but it might get us through.

Oh, and Tom, you really brought so much of it forward, and the letting your heart speak for you and not being afraid of something being taken away from you that you have to protect. The quibbles I felt myself having earlier under that challenge seem pretty small after gaining the perspective from your contribution. Thank you.

  • “Matriarchy has been rather successful, no murders, rapes, crime, just the sort of stable soceity we should be aiming for if we wanted to survive.”-UF

There’s a Matriarchal Society out there somewhere today with no Murders, Rapes or Crime? Where is this place? Amazonia? Nunavut? Kalahari? How many people exactly are currently thriving under this idealized rule by women?

Your Mosuo reference reads as follows:

Known to many as the Mosuo (Chinese: 摩梭; pinyin: Mósuō; also spelled Moso or Musuo), but known often to themselves as the Na, the Mosuo are a small ethnic group living in Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces in China, close to the border with Tibet. Consisting of a population of approximately 40,000, most of them live in the Yongning region and around Lugu Lake, high in the Himalayas

40,000 people! In a world of 7B! This is a successful paradigm? If they were suceessful, there would be 78 of them and 40K Patriarchs! this represents an anomaly, not a successful paradigm.

  • RE.

Be careful how you define a successful paradigm.

Were it not for abrupt climate change, I suggest to you that people living in Yunnan would have been among the most capable of getting through the energy bottleneck.

When you start describing success in terms of overconsumption and population overshoot you are on a very slippery slope.

My guess is that there are about 5,000 (maybe fewer) Australian aboriginals living much as their ancestors did for the past 60,000 years, versus 23 million ‘maggots’ living totally unsustainable lifestyles that are on the verge of collapse.

Which of those diametrically opposed groups is likely to fare best over the coming decade or so?

BP spill: Sea methane persisted after microbe cleanup

Scientists on Sunday said that methane which leaked from the 2010 oil-rig blowout in the Gulf of Mexico persisted in the sea for months beyond a presumed cleanup of the gas by marine microbes.

As much as half a million tonnes of natural gas, 80 percent of it methane, leaked into the deep sea as a result of the blowout on April 20, 2010, on BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig.

The leak triggered a surprising “bloom” of marine bacteria that feasted on the gassy hydrocarbon plume.

The bugs performed a valuable environmental service, helping to prevent gas from lingering in the sea — where it would contribute to ocean acidification — or from escaping to the air, where it would add to the greenhouse-gas problem.

The bloom was so dramatic that, by the end of August, tests suggested all the gas had been mopped out by these natural little helpers.

But in a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience on Sunday, US marine scientists said the bloom abruptly declined at the end of June, even as methane concentrations remained about 5,000 times above background levels.

The bugs did indeed remove a significant amount of the gas, but their population crashed while the leak was still in progress, it said.

Engineers eventually capped the blowout on July 15, after 83 days. In addition to the gas, around four million barrels of oil escaped into the Gulf of Mexico.

Data from research expeditions that ran from May to December 2010 suggest that the residual plumes dispersed, according to the study.

Above-normal methane concentrations from the well, carrying a telltale carbon isotope signature, were found over a large area north and northeast of the wellhead, and this persisted until the end of the year at least, the study said.

The investigation, headed by Samantha Joye at the University of Georgia, did not estimate how much gas was not gobbled up by the microbes.

In addition, it was not designed to assess any environmental damage.

Wyoming First State To Reject Science Standards Over Climate Change Denial

Wyoming, the nation’s top coal-producing state, is the first to reject new K-12 science standards proposed by national education groups mainly because of global warming components.

The Wyoming Board of Education decided recently that the Next Generation Science Standards need more review after questions were raised about the treatment of man-made global warming.

Board President Ron Micheli said the review will look into whether “we can’t get some standards that are Wyoming standards and standards we all can be proud of.”

Fox News climate change coverage is now 28% accurate, up from 7%

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has just published an analysis of 2013 climate coverage by the three major American cable news networks. The report and data are available online, and the results are summarized in the figure below. [see graph]

UCS reviewed nearly 600 segments mentioning “global warming” or “climate change” across the networks’ most prominent evening and weekend programs during the 2013 calendar year. Segments that contained any inaccurate or misleading representations of climate science were categorized as misleading; otherwise they were characterized as being accurate.

UCS also put the misleading statements in sub-categories that reveal the problematic tendencies of each network’s climate coverage. Aaron Huertas, a science communications officer at UCS who led the analysis said of the difference between network climate coverage,

“Sometimes, it’s like the networks are covering different planets. Unfortunately, too many politicians, interest groups, and pundits continue to dispute established climate science and cable shows sometimes give them a platform to do so.”

The UCS analysis found that Fox News Channel hosts and guests were the most likely to accuse scientists of manipulating or hiding climate data. Fox hosts and guests often conveyed misinformation about scientific findings, including many false claims that global warming is not occurring. [read the rest if interested]

Thanks. So what is termed successful and more efficient will not be so during a bottleneck. There’s the old saying that the last shall be the first. So a swathe of marginalized entities within IC–hunter gatherers, matriarchy, historic technology, etc.–would be more adaptable (were adaptation possible) than the so called successful entities that have led us to this crisis. But then, we may need everything at this point. As in using whatever works?

  • Kick-ass piece!

  • I just watched the Malpractice allegory for the first time. Pauline and Guy have such versatile talent. Cracked me up! Especially when Guy says, “almost all my friends consider me an optimist..I couldn’t be more excited for the future.”

  • artleads says, “So what if Paul Chefurka is wrong?”

I am very probably “wrong” to some degree or another. All hypotheses regarding the origins of human behavior are wrong to greater or lesser extents, after all.

However, I’m not presenting my thermodynamic behavioral hypothesis as some be-all and end-all Theory of Everything. It’s more appropriate to think of it as just one more framework – a different lens through which human behavior can be examined. We have many such lenses already – biology, history, anthropology, sociology and psychology are all commonly accepted ways of assessing human activity. Using one of them in the appropriate circumstances doesn’t invalidate the others – at least when each is used in its own appropriate situation. So long as any given framework is not asked to extend its explanatory reach too far outside the domain in which its assumptions apply, all is well.

The reason I developed this new hypothesis is that after a decade of investigation I concluded that the other explanations did not adequately explain our manifest failure to act collectively to prevent or rectify the global existential crisis we now face. Each of the standard explanations seemed to leave some aspects of the question “Why?” unanswered – or even unaddressed. The usual suspects – patriarchy, greed, short-termism and human exceptionalism – can easily seen as consequences rather than causes. But consequences of what, exactly? What is the radical, the true root of the situation? None of the standard explanations gave a fully satisfactory explanation for why 7 billion of us would act against the interests of ourselves, each other and the rest of the biosphere, even as the snowballing risks became obvious.

So I spent a year coming up with a new hypothesis. As Erwin Schroedinger noted in 1943, life encodes the Second Law of Thermodynamics in its very genetic structure. Those genes evolved over billions of years to maximize the probability of survival for the individual, within the context of its species and its environment. Survival-enhancing behavior entails competition in resource-limited environments. Winning such competitions appears to require organisms to mobilize the available energy better than their competitors. This requirement generates a host of species-specific behaviors, from which humans are not exempt despite our brains.

In fact, our evolved brains are what make us global winners in the inter- and intra-species competitions for resources including energy. Any behavior that might interfere with winning those competitions are suppressed by group social mechanisms, though they may appear at the individual level. Those group social mechanisms are extremely powerful though often unrecognized, because they are behavior patterns that have their roots in a million years of environmental adaptation and genetic evolution. Any move to reduce our degree of organization and consumption – even in the interests of reducing detrimental environmental changes – is countered by the group and its organizational structures. In this framework, little room is left for the counter-growth actions of individuals to have much impact on the functioning of the collective.

From this viewpoint, the assumptions behind other explanatory frameworks – biology, history, anthropology, sociology, psychology and the rest – can be seen as the enablers of growth and frank barriers to degrowth. They can neither explain our peculiar growth-addicted, risk-blind behavior, nor can they act to counter it.

So yes, I could be wrong. It’s going to be a difficult hypothesis to test experimentally, so its validity would have to be established by softer means. But given the number of scientists currently working on different aspects of this very idea, it seems worthy of consideration. I know that it answered a lot of questions for me.

Thanks for the clear and simple explanation. If intuition is a lens for addressing our crisis, that’s the one I’d have some competence to use. So I appreciate the space you provide for other paths to understanding.

AFAIK, Tibet changed from a war-like culture to a monastic and peaceful one within a short timespan. Meanwhile, (without my being able to make the case) I wonder as to whether a voracious civilization like ours could (possibly like Tibet) flick a switch and turn on the opposite behavior. (It has always been my intuitive take that the ability to go to one extreme bespeaks the ability to go to the opposite one.) If so, I believe it would be a switch from a male-dominant to a female-dominant society.

  • “Be careful how you define a successful paradigm.”-KM

Success in this case meaning the paradigm that reproduced the most and overran the earth in numbers.

Obviously it is not successful from the POV of sustainability, but then no paradigm for life on earth is truly sustainable in perpetuity since eventually conditions will no longer support life.

The Ag paradigm was more successful in terms of exploiting the environment and producing more people, eventually virtually squashing out the H-G paradigm, which only still exists in some very marginal areas that weren’t suited for Ag.

The Ag paradigm is a territorial acquisition paradigm, and so begat armies and war on the mass scale, which for most of history had men doing the fighting. So these societies became male dominated, or “Patriarchal” if you wanna use that term.

Patriarchy is an outcome of Ag. It is an effect, not a cause.

There are many unanswered questions in this world, and a new one has emerged: why would xraymike be so utterly determined to steer people away from the truth?

One person I have discussed the matter with had detected what she described as ‘something fishy’ a while ago, and speculated that Mike is yet another plant, there to divert anyone who starts to wake up from finding the true path.

I don’t think that is the case. I think xraymike is just not a deep thinker. He likes to search the net to find ‘experts’ who share his misconceptions and misunderstanding whom he can then quote as authorities.

It was interesting that about a week ago xraymike asked: “What does Guy think?”

I replied that Guy thinks much the same as I do, that you cannot break the laws of mathematics, chemistry and physics, and that the official 9/11 narrative does not stand up to scientific scrutiny. Mike blocked/deleted several of my comments from that point on.

As ulvfugl noted a week or so ago, NBL seems to be one of the last places where free speech is still permitted.

I do not always see eye to eye with ulvfugl but I very much like what he wrote a week or so ago: ‘We live and learn. Well some of us do’.

  • It seems that xraymike has decided the hole he is in is not deep enough and wants to bury himself completely, so has decided to trash anyone and everyone who disagrees with him, including everyone on NBL:

    ‘@AndyUK

I notice you’re wasting time with the nutters on NBL. Why do that to yourself?

Conversations with CT enthusiasts are never constructive. Apparently Kevin Moore has written a book on the subject of controlled demolition of the WTC, so he has a lot invested in this particular CT. He’s a hopeless case. And Guy McPherson has bought it hook, line, and sinker.’

  • About conspiracy theories, and “debunked” conspiracy theories

The problem with all this theories is that the available data is not scientific. There is no available hard data.
Either to support the theory, nor to support the debunking information.
What we can find is usually some information to support either position. But never the available information is solid enough. There are always holes on both positions.
To provide solid data, it would be needed real scale testings in many cases, something impossible.
In the end, is up to the reader (or watcher) to decide.
Worth to mention the foam that bore a hole in the wind of the Space Shuttle. Without the test finally carried out, with some resistance, it was clearly proven, that a piece of foam could break a hole in the leading edge of a wing, something hard to believe to many.
About 9/11, to me there are enough aspects of the story to al least give space to the possibility that it wasn´t what it was told it was. What Bob mentions is part of the information that opens space to doubt about the told story.
The other typical story is the travel to the moon. And again, There are some aspects that have never been “debunked”, so, there is some space to doubt of part of the story as it has been told.
My final conclusion about all this stories (both sides) is that the truth will never be known.
But it doesn´t matter, we are talking of the past, and we have lived with it so far. And our present will not change because the conspiracy theory is right, if it is.

Climate change, based in scientific hard data, is a different story.
But forecasting the future, is another story, even based in solid present and past scientific data.

Thanks! God help me to remember that name! I can master enan and dromo, but I’ll probably forget those too.

Meanwhile, I haven’t so far found the answer for this one:

All points on a spherical surface comprise that surface’s center. I looked it up, assuming it be some kind of set. But all I got so far is that the set of all points is a line.

    http://www.ask.com/question/the-set-of-all-points-is-called

I wonder if you or someone else has the definition re points on the sphere. It gets downright mystical when you think that each point of the planet is its center. That seems to confer central importance to everything. Or am I going spacey again?

  • Godofredo wrote:

So would you say that the events in Chile of 11th September 1973 do not matter? The overthrow of the democratically elected government by a gang of Washington-backed fascists ‘doesn’t matter’?

Are you saying that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, which were predicated on the lies of people like Tony B Liar, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice etc. and very much linked to the lies surrounding 9/11, do not matter?

I say, think again. Exposing the lies of 9/11 are fundamental to exposing all the other lies we are told by governments, such as those about GDP, money, the economy, the environment, reasons for new wars etc.

At one time New York was noted for a policy of zero tolerance. Although I can tolerate small white lies that allow people to cope with difficulties in their lives I have zero tolerance for massive lies told by governments and their agents. And I have zero tolerance for people who defend the lies told by governments and their agents.

When you say our present situation will not change if government conspiracies are exposed, I say you are totally wrong: the way forward, if there is one, is to expose the lies.

Thomas Hardy: ‘If a way to the better there be, it lies in taking a full look at the worst.’

NOPE!! There are plenty of data provided by the official government investigation , and these data n fact completely support demolition, and not the line which the government reports have tried to push, e.g. 166 out of 170 samples of fire-impacted structural steel from the main WTC towers (i.e. 1 and 2) did not reach even 500 deg F, none reached the 1112 deg F level needed to significantly weaken structural steel, while at the same time the investigation of the dust deposited by the towers as they came down found a remarkably high content of molten iron spheres, meaning that the structure was subject to temps of at least 2800 deg F to melt iron, and then the molten iron was cast out at high speed by a large force. so as to be shaped into spheres. The fires didn’t provide the heat, fires do not create a horizontal force. More government data, and videos, show large steel beams being cast hundreds of feet horizontally. The government investigation of the WTC 7 collapse admitted that the building came down for over 2 seconds at free fall acceleration, meaning zero resistance from the lower structure, something which initially the investigators deemed a violation of the laws of physics if there was an intact structure at all, assuming a gravity driven collapse as per the official story. Plenty of data, and they do not support the official story, even when furnished by the official investigation. See this and more at http://www.consensus911.org/the-911-consensus-points/

  • the ability to go to one extreme bespeaks the ability to go to the opposite one

In some cases it is a one-way trip.
Lungfish venture onto land, lose gills.
Proto-cetaceans venture into the ocean, lose limbs.
Saurischian dinosaurs take to the air, lose the ability to use the forelimbs for tetrapodal ambulation.

All points on a spherical surface comprise that surface’s center. I looked it up, assuming it be some kind of set. But all I got so far is that the set of all points is a line.

Any point on a spherical surface can be the centre of the surface, but each center excludes all other points from being centres. The many points do not comprise a centre; each independently is a center.

There is an infinity of points equidistant from any point on a surface that does not curve into continuity with itself, (if the surface is a plane surface, they form the circumference of a circle), but only two points along a line equidistant from any other point on that line. On a spherical surface from any point there is only one point with the distance to the antipode and that is the antipode itself. At all other distances there is an infinity of points.

I know of no such connection but am willing to be convinced if you have some hard evidence that obeys the laws of mathematics, chemistry and physics.

  • As a side note, we need to step back before WW2 and recall Marine Major General Smedley Butler. In 1933, Wall Street bankers and financiers had bankrolled the successful coups by both Hitler and Mussolini. Brown Brothers Harriman in New York was financing Hitler right up to the day war was declared with Germany. And they decided that a fascist dictatorship in the United States based on the one on Italy would be far better for their business interests than Roosevelt’s “New Deal” which threatened massive wealth re-distribution to recapitalize the working and middle class of America. So the Wall Street tycoons recruited General Butler to lead the overthrow of the US Government and install a “Secretary of General Affairs” who would be answerable to Wall Street and not the people, would crush social unrest and shut down all labor unions. General Butler pretended to go along with the scheme but then exposed the plot to Congress. Congress, then as now in the pocket of the Wall Street bankers, refused to act. When Roosevelt learned of the planned coup he demanded the arrest of the plotters, but the plotters simply reminded Roosevelt that if any one of them were sent to prison, their friends on Wall Street would deliberatly collapse the still-fragile economy and blame Roosevelt for it. Roosevelt was thus unable to act until the start of WW2, at which time he prosecuted many of the plotters under the Trading With The Enemy act. The Congressional minutes into the coup were finally released in 1967 and became the inspiration for the movie, “Seven Days in May” but with the true financial villains erased from the script.

Underwater horrors: shells of marine life melting off the coast of the U.S.

It could be the plot of a horror movie: humans wake up one day to discover that chemical changes in the atmosphere are dissolving away parts of their bodies. But for small marine life known as sea butterflies, or pteropods, this is what’s happening off the West Cost of the U.S. Increased carbon in the ocean is melting away shells of sea butterflies, which are tiny marine snails that underpin much of the ocean’s food chain, including prey for pink salmon, mackerel, and herring.

“We did not expect to see pteropods being affected to this extent in our coastal region for several decades,” said William Peterson, Ph.D., an oceanographer at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center who co-authored the findings in a paper for the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Sampling sea butterflies in the species Limacina helicina off California, Washington, and Oregon in the summer of 2011, researchers found that over 50 percent of onshore sea butterflies suffered from “severe dissolution damage,” according to the paper. Offshore, 24 percent of individuals showed such damage.

The shells of sea butterflies are dissolving due to increased acidification in the oceans caused by society’s CO2 emissions. While emissions from burning coal, gas, and oil are pumped into the atmosphere, the oceans eventually soak up nearly a third of the global cumulative emissions. This increase in CO2 in the oceans leads to a decrease in the availability of calcium carbonate and its crystal form, aragonite, which sea butterflies use to make their shells. Many other key species require calcium carbonate, such as corals, crustaceans, mollusks, and some plankton species.

    Here’s another from last week:

    http://www.dailyimpact.net/2014/05/08/west-coast-marine-ecosystem-crashing/

West Coast Marine Ecosystem May Be Crashing

This is not a drill. A profound crash in the web of marine life in West Coast waters is under way, and may have gone on for two years already. Current observations that are setting biologists’ hair on fire include:
    the sardine population from California to Canada is vanishing — the worst crash in generations;
    starving sea lion and seal pups are washing up on California beaches in unprecedented numbers for the second straight year;
    brown pelicans in the same area are showing signs of starvation and have not raised any chicks for four years;
a massive bloom of toxic algae in Monterey Bay is poisoning sea lions, fish and shellfish, and poses a threat to human health.

Sardines are a volatile species, and the fisheries based on them are famously boom-and-bust in nature. Among other things, sardines respond to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a periodic (10-20 year) variation of sea-surface temperatures that is the northern counterpart of the Southern Oscillation, one phase of which is better known these days as El Nino. While is is true that the PDO is now in its negative phase, bringing to the surface cold upwelling water that sardines hate, marine biologists are not convinced that the PDO can account for the drastic reduction of the sardine population that they are seeing.

The sardines’ absence is radiating through the ecosystem. Only plankton are below them in the food chain, and virtually everything else in, on and near the ocean is above them and depends on them; hence the starving pelicans and seals.

The toxic algae bloom in Monterey Bay is a separate problem but it is affecting the same ecosystem in what some experts are calling a perfect storm. Wildlife officials are dealing with dozens of convulsing sea lions and dead sea birds — some of which actually drop out of the sky — and are watching helplessly as the toxicity of Monterey Bay increases off the charts. Because of the toxins, health departments are warning against human consumption of the area’s shellfish, crabs, anchovies or sardines — that latter warning just in case anybody catches any sardines, which is not happening.

The storm becomes even more perfect when you add the effects of ocean acidification, which is decimating the shellfish populations (and industries) of the Pacific Northwest and Canada. [see Billions of Shellfish Die as Ocean Turns to Acid] And if, as some are suggesting, one of the factors turns out to be spreading radiation from Japan’s defunct Fukushima nuclear power plant, well then the storm is more than perfect.

Like an unbalanced bicycle rider. an unbalanced ecosystem can wobble back and forth for a while without crashing. It can even recover. Whether what we’re seeing on the Pacific Coast is a wobble or a crash will be evident quite soon. But in either case, the effects will be dire and long lasting.

NASA GISS Shows April 2014 was Second Hottest on Record Amidst Epic Siberian Heatwave, Wildfires

Extraordinary ocean surface temperature anomalies that spiked into the range of + 1.4 C above 1880s values and a continued progression of the Pacific toward El Nino began to take its toll in April. NASA GISS shows that global temperature anomalies hit 0.73 C above the 1951-1980 average last month, the second hottest in the record and just behind 2010′s +0.80 C reading.

2010 was an El Nino year and the most recent record-holder for hottest year in the NASA measure. So it appears all it takes is just a slight tilt toward El Nino, as we saw in April, to challenge previous highs.

The global hotspot for the month again centered on the Yakutia region of Siberia stretching south into Mongolia and Northern China and north into the East Siberian and Beaufort Seas. Positive anomaly values hit as high as 7.9 degrees C above average for the entire month in this hot zone. This was the same region that experienced anomalously intense wildfires throughout much of April and into early May with some fires burning along gargantuan fronts stretching 20 to 100 miles.

Alaska, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Queensland and West Antarctica also displayed very warm readings in the range of 2-4 C above average for the month. Meanwhile, positive sea surface temperature anomalies advanced into the Eastern Equatorial Pacific during April, a clear sign that ocean heat was beginning to transfer back to the atmosphere.

Negative temperature anomalies were confined primarily to the Hudson Bay region and to the High Arctic above 80 North in the Northern Hemisphere and in the Southern Ocean adjacent to Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere. These cool zones were both small and isolated as most of the world experienced above average to well above average readings.

    [concludes]

Following March’s +0.70 above average reading, April showed continued progress toward warming. And with May seeing further advancement toward El Nino in the first and second week, we can expect global temperature values are likely to keep rising.

Western Antarctic ice sheet collapse has already begun, scientists warn

The collapse of the Western Antarctica ice sheet is already under way and is unstoppable, two separate teams of scientists said on Monday.

The glaciers’ retreat is being driven by climate change and is already causing sea-level rise at a much faster rate than scientists had anticipated.

The loss of the entire western Antarctica ice sheet could eventually cause up to 4 metres (13ft) of sea-level rise, devastating low-lying and coastal areas around the world. But the researchers said that even though such a rise could not be stopped, it is still several centuries off, and potentially up to 1,000 years away.

The two studies, by Nasa and the University of Washington, looked at the ice sheets of western Antarctica over different periods of time.

The Nasa researchers focused on melting over the last 20 years, while the scientists at the University of Washington used computer modelling to look into the future of the western Antarctic ice sheet.

But both studies came to broadly similar conclusions – that the thinning and melting of the Antarctic ice sheet has begun and cannot be halted, even with drastic action to cut the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

They also suggest that recent accumulation of ice in Antarctica was temporary.

“A large sector of the western Antarctic ice sheet has gone into a state of irreversible retreat. It has passed the point of no return,” Eric Rignot, a glaciologist at Nasa and the University of California, Irvine, told a conference call. “This retreat will have major consequences for sea level rise worldwide.” [read the rest]

You are not alone (in the thought that we are not alone as that thought relates to crop circles). I would invite anyone who is willing to consider an alternative to that suggested by Doug and Dave (no longer with us) or some mysterious ongoing army of people willing to spend untold hours designing, creating and confounding us always in the process of doing so by never being seen and creating inexplicable physical anomolies within them, to take a look at the Robbert van den Broeke case out of Holland as reported on by Nancy Talbot at the following link:

The first crop circles of this year have been reported by Robbert

  • The simple fact that John, there’s no war I don’t love, McCain and his girlfriend Lindsey flew across the globe to Kiev, Ukraine to support the “uprising” speaks volumes.

  • I decided to post less these days choosing to step back onto the sidelines, only the site u put in his comment motivated me.

I’ve found the constant release of information regarding Climate Change from the multitude of sources to be enough to believe our goose is cooked. Others, many others think I’m delusional. Many of these others have those treasured PhD or MBA, etc after their name giving them the confidence that they know more than I.

I have no problem with the 2030 date (exponential growth can work pretty quick). I have no problem with the concept and reality of conspiracy situations. There are so many instances of back room deals occurring and not coming to public awareness for years that I lost count. Tobacco, Trolleys, etc., etc.

Smedley Butler and the take over has been discussed in the film The Corporation, by Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick in The Untold History of the United States (both video and book) and many other places.

Sadly, I did not learn of this via my public school education. Such an important event in our history and the warnings it portends. What concerns me about sites such as What Really Happened is that they take something that happened and then season it with other little tidbits making it difficult for me to trust them and what they report.

If I hadn’t been informed by other sources I would probably have had a hard time believing what WRH reported because of what is inserted into their explanation regarding Butler.

From the entry u linked to:

“Of course, the public school system is as subservient to the bankers’ wishes to keep certain history from you, just as the corporate media is subservient to Monsanto’s wishes to keep the dangers of GMOs from you, and the global warming cult’s wishes to conceal from you that the Earth has actually been cooling for the last 16 years. Thus is should come as little surprise that much of the real reasons for the events of the Civil War are not well known to the average American.”

Right there in words is “global warming cult” and “Earth has actually been cooling for the last 16 years.” We’re facing some pretty dire stuff, only all that dire stuff is only in my head and yours, and yours and yours (who still come to this site).

It’s important to know about Butler only I can’t incorporate the mind of a person who can’t understand that Climate Change is not a hoax. I can’t understand the mind of the receptionist at my dentist’s office who says “The Earth is cleansing itself.” Yeah, cleansing itself and won’t answer my inquiry as to well how do your three children play into that.

It’s why I have trouble understanding how on the Think Progress site which does focus on Climate Change they are also promising a future where we don’t have to give up anything, just change to renewables.

When Joe Romm keeps throwing up articles about the wonders of solar I have to wonder about him. Can’t he do the simple equation that solar and wind are fossil fuel extenders. That we can’t pave the road with solar or wind, that we still can’t run factories that produce the parts for these wonders of sustainable energy (which will allow us to grow the economy and continue murdering at minimum 200 species a day) or run vehicles that transport them from factory to delivery site, etc., etc.

Producing solar and wind still requires and infrastructure that has lead to scientists to once again report that the situation is happening several decades sooner than they had original projected re the fact that the shells of sea life are forming thinner and thinner.

It’s why I have such issues with Glen Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill and others these days. Transparency is transparency. Warts and all. No, I don’t believe anyone is a Virgin Mary; however I’m not defending a billionaire funding my news site by saying I didn’t know anything about him. It seems incredible that someone with a legal background such as Greenwald wouldn’t do his Due Diligence on his new publisher.

Why is it that Dan Miller can state unequivocally in his talk from 2011 that if we reach 6C by 2100 humans are gone and there from where I sit there hasn’t been any blowback as there has been with Guy making the same statement. There is no blow back from that because it’s 90 years off and Guy’s shortened that time line by 70 years so we’re scared out of our minds because it’s happening to us right here and now and not to our beloved grandchildren (who haven’t been born yet).

We’re still in BAU and I don’t care if people keep saying the mantra “Past behavior is not a predictor of the future behavior.” You know why, because in the vast majority of the cases it is. We haven’t changed or moved in the right direction for 40 years. When would it be okay to be honest and say, “we’re not going to change because we don’t want to change and to bad for those of you who do want to change.”

I’d rather stick to these points than have someone blame Guy for what Mike Ruppert chose to do. With logic such as that isn’t Dan Miller just as responsible for stating in public that humans are toast by 2100 if we don’t change. Or does Miller get a free ride because he feeds us the line about change?
